The laziest Halloween costume of 2009: Hipster pushing a shopping cart pretending to be homeless. Can anyone top this?

Hofstra’s face off middie Mike Vaccaro might be the best college aged costume designer of ALL TIME. His affinity for J. Depp and his attention to detail are unparalleled.

The End of Fall Ball

sru

Who throws like that?

Pitt fall ball came to a conclusion yesterday against the William Penn Tavern Club team which is the only club team in Pittsburgh. They have a few players from Pitt, a few from Mercyhurst, Wheeling Jesuit, saw one kid wearing a Kenyon helmet, one in Washington & Jefferson gear etc.

Playing against men is also a good test for a college team especially when the kids who log the most minutes for us are in the 18-19 minute time slot with the exception of four players.

Long story short, we were playing against grizzled veterans.

Defensively its very easy to stop a club team in theory. They don’t practice. They don’t have sets or designed motion. One person dodges, one person will follow the slide. If you can stop the dodgers, you’ll be able to stop the offense. Easier said then done when a club team middie who got the pole in college is dodging against your 2358th string d middie.
Running an offense against a club team defense is also very simple. Again, they don’t practice. The goalie doesn’t know everybody’s names. The poles come out to throw kitchen sinks. I think the first time you witness a 6’3 man throw a jumping over the head check in person and the ball carrier, your teammate, wrenches back in agony as the ball trickles the other way, is like the first time you see Dashboard Confessional. No matter how much you have been told, nothing can prepare you for what just happened.

If you’re comfortable dodging through pressure, your offense will be fine. They don’t  have time for a two slide. That defender has a beard and bills to pay.

This was my first afternoon game in the Cost Center. One endzone has windows that let in a violent glare. Something to consider/remember for the spring. I recall a play in which I was attempting to feed one of our attackmen. His cut matched up perfectly with the windows. He looked like a god king. Needless to say I was too stunned to throw an accurate pass.

Playing a clean game the afternoon following a national holiday proved to be a difficult test for both squads. The second half must have been a lot easier on the eyes for the fans than the first half. For some reason, we played by their rules, five poles on the field, no 20 second or 10 second count, no penalty for a faceoff infraction.

Seems like if you come to my field you play by my rules.

I believe the final score was 7-5 for the old guys. To quote Kevin Zorovich, “For people looking for the results of the scrimmage please go search the web for ignorant Skip Bayless-like credential bloggers commenting about it, it’s a scrimmage “Child Pleez” is what that gets.”

Perhaps we should have used Michigan’s ten man ride instead of a drop back ride. Thanks no twenty second count. Didn’t realize that until the second half.

I finally scored right handed today, two tallies actually.

FIST PUMPING, one of the best celebrations of all time.

We now have 88 days to prepare for the start of the season.

If you think fall ball matters, look at BYU. They beat Air Force in fall ball and people thought they could walk on water.

The Cougars walked on water right to Four Loss Town and a semi final exit in the national tournament.

Fall ball is important as a practice run, an experiment, a sampling. Learn from your trial and error and apply it to the spring. The games don’t count but what you do with the knowledge learned from those games does count. It counts a lot.

Recycled heckle targeted at Greg Oden, but there’s no choice here, had to be done.

Hey Houghton Twin, what was World War II like?

Notes

  • Colorado State’s end of season schedule is brutal
  • Kenny Nims is confused, from his twitter: On my way back the the city of champions (Cuse) after a great weekend in the city
  • Pitt is ranked 13th in the BCS. Oklahoma is ranked 24th. Normally people say I never thought I’d live to see the day. I never thought to think that, ever, regardless of my current age.
  • Ovechkin hurt himself.
  • USA’s roster is announced today. I should be sitting in on the conference call. No big deal. Our reaction to the roster tomorrow.
  • Also tomorrow we will announce the winner of the glove contest.
