USA Lacrosse 23 Man Roster

american-flag-2a

Currently the USA training roster is at 40, here is our final 23 who should make the team if they hope to win another title.

Attack

  • Ryan Boyle – Boston Cannons (Princeton ’04)
  • Drew Westervelt – Denver Outlaws (UMBC ’07)
  • Brendan Mundorf – Denver Outlaws (UMBC ’06)
  • Matt Danowski – Long Island Lizards (Duke ’08)
  • Brandon Corp – Boston Cannons (Colgate ’09)

Midfield

  • Paul Rabil – Boston Cannons (Johns Hopkins ’08)
  • Joe Walters – Toronto Nationals (Maryland ’06)
  • Stephen Peyser – Long Island Lizards (Johns Hopkins ’08)
  • Max Seibald – Denver Outlaws (Cornell ’09)
  • Chris Eck – Boston Cannons (Colgate ’08)
  • Matt Zash – Long Island Lizards (Duke ’06)
  • Matt Poskay – Boston Cannons (Virginia ’06)
  • John Glynn – Chicago Machine (Cornell ’09)
  • Steven Brooks – Chicago Machine (Syracuse ’08)
  • Matt Abbott – Washington Bayhawks (Syracuse ’09)

Defense

  • Eric Martin – Denver Outlaws (Salisbury ’04)
  • Kyle Sweeney – Boston Cannons (Georgetown ’03)
  • Joe Cinosky – Toronto Nationals (Maryland ’09)
  • Jack Reid – Boston Cannons (Massachusetts ’06)
  • Lee Zink – Denver Outlaws (Maryland ’04)
  • Parker McKee – Duke ’10

Goalie

  • Brian Dougherty – Long Island Lizards (Maryland ’95)
  • Adam Fullerton – Denver Outlaws (Army ’08), why Jesse Schwartzman’s name wasn’t called is beyond me

Without Powells

The 2006 team featured every Powell brother known to man. The 2010 will have none. We need to win this title in the worst to restore world order. The committee will not be naming Ryan Powell to the team for the following reasons, first, he didn’t play in the MLL this summer instead he is listed as a member of Big Foot LC. Second, the Powell brothers looked lethargic in the 2006 final against Canada, therefore giving someone a second chance to make the world team after playing on a beer league team makes no sense. Third, and perhaps most glaring, Powell will be 32 by the time this tournament takes place, his time is up. For those of you not in the know, Ryan was the only Powell selected to the 40 man training roster.

Midfield Grit

Canadians are used to getting destroyed in box lacrosse. They aren’t afraid of dishing and receiving contact. This USA midfield is loaded with sand. We need players who care about winning, who care about picking up ground balls, who care about playing defense and getting us up the field quickly. We chose three middies who can face off against Geoff Snider, an unsolvable problem for the 2006 USA team, and only one of whom Eck, is a face off get off guy. Peyser and Glynn are junkyard dogs that can battle Snider but more importantly aren’t afraid of shooting the ball and aren’t defensive liabilities. Speaking of junkyard dogs, add Zash, Seibald, Rabil, and Abbott to the list of more than capable two way middies, but let’s be honest, Rabil’s the best midfielder, perhaps ever and he won’t have to play much defense. Plug in Brooks as a zone buster or on man up and you have an outside shooter to compliment Rabil. In the real world, Harrison is going to make the team and he’ll probably chip in some goals but in my mind he’s not any better than Matt Abbott.

What’s meaner than a junkyard dog? I’ll tell you, Eric Martin

During the 2004 NCAA tournament, a good friend of mine was being covered by Eric Martin. My friend the attackman, an all conference player in his own right was effectively eliminated by the two time D3 defender of the year. At some point late in the fourth quarter, my friend finally found space to take Martin to the cage and mustered off a shot. As the ball transitioned the other way after the save Martin said, “You waited all game to take that @#&%ing shot?”

Add in Joe Cinosky and Jack Reid and you have a ferocious blue collar defense capable of getting under the skin of the Canadians.

Starting Ten

Boyle-Danowski-Westervelt

Rabil-Walters-Seibald

Cinosky-Reid-Martin

Dougherty

This roster is a significant improvement over 2006. I'll take Danowski and Rabil on my team over the Powells any day. We are packing some heavy hitters and some intense firepower. There is no reason for us not to walk away with the championship.Unless of course US Lax follows US Soccer's mentality and work eithic. Then we are screwed…

Missing: Harrison & Polanco. They'll be on it.

  • aaronwith2as

Yeah the only glaring omission I see is Harrison. Theres a couple young-guns on the mid's that I don't see cutting it.

  • Drew

You hate on the powells, but Mike Powell was All-World in '02 and '06. Also Mike and Ryan were Team USA leading scorers. Harrison seems to be a really nice guy and is a great player. But if you watch the MLL its apparent that he is not one of the top 6 middies in that league. He wasn't good enough in '02 and isn't now.

Bob Bradley coaching for USA lax? Is he going to sub off a forward for a defender in a tie ball game?

  • http://412.LaxAllStars.com 412 Lax

If anybody but Desko had been the head coach a) Ryan Boyle would have played more b) they would have won.

Mikey is an overrated diva. He was good, once upon a time, now he is shit. Brine should cancel his contract and hire somebody that is actually playing the pro game. Especially considering Brine and the MLL are owned by New Balance…Harrison is a great guy, but he has sucked over the last two years. The fact that he is injury prone probably contributes greatly to that. Both Mikey and Harrison are marketable, but I would argue that Rabil is more marketable than either. Plus he is more skilled than Harrison and far more committed than Mikey. Not to mention that he is the all-time Flow king…

In the end it's all about how these guys play together. An important thing to remember. Marketability is one thing, but I have feeling Rabil and Harrison would mesh well.

  • adamedg

I agree. If I remember correctly, we got to see a little bit of that during Rabil's freshman year at Hopkins when Harrison was a senior…

I agree Ryan Boyle would have helped, but MP could distribute the pill just as well. Here's what happend in that game. USA was down by 1 at half. Gary Gait drilled 4 goals in the 4th quarter. USA went 10-28 on face-offs. That's alot of possessions that they lost. Not having Paul Cantabene killed Team USA, really poor selection. Also leaving the best to American goalies at the time home didn't help either or leaving Sims and Sonke at home. At the end of the day USA just didn't bring their best team to the World Games. I agree also that a large part of winning is meshing, which the 2006 Team did not do.

Wasn't a member of the 40 man training team, not sure if he didn't tryout or wasn't invited

  • http://412.LaxAllStars.com 412 Lax

It's a glaring omission because he is a big name player, but he isn't as effective against adults as he was in college. During the MLL final Toronto covered him with a short stick and he still couldn't score. I went so far as to ask STX what they thought of their premiere player not only being a complete no show in the most important game of the season but also not commanding enough respect from Toronto. No goals on four shots, no assists. To a small degree that game was USA vs Canada. Denver gets out coached and some no name Canadian (Shawn Williams) scores the final two goals of the game to win it for the Nationals/Clemson Tigers. You don't need brand names to win a title, you need the right players.

Dixon tried out and wasn't selected, huge omission. Coach Huntley (Toronto Nationals and Canadian National Team) said he was top three player in the MLL and one of only two players that he said you can't tell which hand his is natural. Again Team USA is leaving some of their best players at home. Its not good when your rival says you left one the best players in the world at home.

My fingers were crossed that he didn't try out because of injury. That's probably offensive than the Schwartzman snub

Polanco was hurt much of this summer. He's only getting older not sure he's worth a roster spot when he can be replaced by younger, faster, and just as mean defenders especially Martin.
