People Helping People: Spike Drill

Our first instructional video. On a new server unit too!

We upgraded to a new server last night. Had to redo this post.

Back we are back with our Good Fridays inspired video.

Every Friday we will post one of the drills that we run in practice. It is our hope that these drills will improve your team as well.

Indiana University: Spike Drill from 412 LAX on Vimeo.

Give us your suggestions on how we can make it better.

My first reaction was a better use of the white board segment.

Fall Ball Flyer

What are you doing to advertise on campus?

Still the song for the weekend.

Coaching positions open at Illinois

I changed my mind. I don’t want Butch Davis to be fired. He’s too entertaining.

Had to rebuild this post after the server upgrade. Special things coming.

    Maybe more/different white board images?

maybe you should draw it up in front of us like how you would draw up a play

What are your feelings on elimination drills – you screw up, you watch from the sidelines?

Pete, I appreciate the plug, however, that flyer was from last year. Still a great idea, though. We went out the morning of the game to hand them out on campus to everyone we could find.

A good idea to keep things competitive as long as it doesn’t take a
while to eliminate everyone. Presumably your weaker players will be
eliminated first and you don’t want them spending too much time on the
    sidelines doing nothing.

When doing the video, instead of always following the ball, spend some time following one player through a couple of his turns through the drill. If you’re unfamiliar with this drill (as I am) it’s difficult to understand where each player goes after making the pass, because they are then out of frame.

Thanks. Just so you know they return to their line.

I am a big fan of this drill, but we do it a bit differently. We start with 5 lines on the perimeter as opposed to inside the drill. The lines are 2 up top, 2 on the wings, 1 at X. We have the players cut from the perimeter into a cone on the crease and the cut back out to the perimeter as the ball gets to the adjacent guy. This way it simulates more of a full V-cut and gets the guys moving a bit more. We also have them go through 3 types of passes (pivots- catching and throwing with the same hand, splits- changing hands in front, and rolls-rolling to the outside and changing hands).
