Defensive Breakdown?

BYU’s spaghetti cuts in the final seconds of the 4th quarter free up Drew Shumway for the game tying goal.

The upfield slide at the 0:10 mark sets a series of unfortunate events in motion. Chapman pole #21 leaves his man (Shumway) slides across the crease to pick up the BYU attackman who suddenly has a 2 on 1 on the back side.

Maybe if you’re #10 for Chapman you’re thinking about helping to cover Shumway but than you’re leaving your man with a 15 yard shot. Chapman’s #10 stays.

The pass is jammed cross crease to BYU’s #8, but Chapman’s #4 deflects the pass. Unfortunately, the deflection lands in Drew Shumway’s stick who goes elevator high riser zingo to tie the game up.

All the slides kind of seemed required honestly.
#10 could have done a better job of splitting the backside, but BYU stacked their guys and got lucky when the pass snuck through.  Chapman poles could have done a better job of working inside out and getting sticks in the lane, but overall I’d just chalk it up to good ball movement off the dodge by BYU.

Enough passes and slides should equal a good look.  Tough way to go out in the end of regulation though for Chapman.

10 has to help there.  He’s locked on a guy 15 out.  Bad defense.   That’s also a ball that could be saved.  The goalie dips, and the shot goes right where his stick was.  Stay still, then react.  Why is he on his knees?

if anything the goalie dipped a bit because the shooter ripped it underhand. not justifying it by any means however

I’d say this is most on #26 needlessly overrunning his mark. I’m sure he’s worried about a catch-and-shoot, but by not breaking down under control, he helps the BYU kid roll off him and force everything that follows. Bad angle, no plan … he goes hurtling outside the offense after giving his team 0 seconds of on-ball D when BYU only has 5 seconds left to work with.
Not sure #10 even realized he was splitting two until it was too late.

Re-watching the clip I see this very obviously now, and I couldn’t agree more.

the goalie dropped to his knees, he would of had it if he hadn’t tsk tsk

My guess is that when 21 slid he didn’t call out so 10 didn’t know he had two to split.  If 26 had played inside and under his man in the first place rather than chasing him outside and letting him go under, then none of this happens.
