412 Lax

Convention Dreaming

412 Lax is headed to Baltimore this weekend for the Coaches Convention. Let’s Lax, indoors.

Baltimore is nothing new to the 412 Lax Staff.

Used to live in Alexandria, Virginia.

Obligatory eighth grade school trip.

Summer camp trip with the fine campers of Trail’s End in 2007.

And of course we’ve seen Wedding Crashers so we are well aware of what the fair city offers.

This will however be our first trip to Balmer of age.

Conventions aren’t alien to us either.

We’ve been to two.

A car convention in Pittsburgh 394 years ago and the 2008 Coaches Convention in Philadelphia.

The 2008 Coaches Convention was spectacular. Every second we were outside in the streets of that city was a disaster.

Truly remarkable.

One of the things we learned from that first experience is you can’t see everything. It’s like going to an amusement park. There are some rides you just won’t be able to throw up on.

Therefore if you are fortunate enough to be attending with your staff, you’ll have to separate to really get your money’s worth. Yes it may lead to some head down, nervous texting moments before and after your presentation but you came to learn first and socialize second.

Another thing we learned is just because they have an excellent winning percentage doesn’t mean coaches will know how to teach you what they do or will be excellent public orators. If you can get two or three points from each presentation, it was worthwhile.

And finally the most important lesson from our first experience was the most difficult to swallow. Nothing you may want is for sale. Everything in vendor village is for show.

A close friend of ours went to the IMCLAHWER Coaches Convention in Baltimore a few weeks ago and he said none of the major companies even bothered to attend. STX told me they won’t have a booth set up for this weekend’s convention. The rationale being that everyone knows what we offer and its too late to order custom equipment.

Why not schedule the conventions in October then?

That presentation should be packed. We will have a front row seat.

We will be walking around the digi cam and Flip Video capturing all the happenings from the weekend.
