When are people going to start calling out Michigan for playing on an illegal field at home? Check out their scores at Oosterban compared to everywhere else. Is it not a ridiculous advantage to have a home field that is 7 yards too narrow? You practice your ride on that field every day, you practice your clear, you offense defense on a field that is 7 yards too narrow, and then other teams come and have 4 quarters to try and adjust. It’s not a surprise they have only lost like 3 or 4 games there since 2003.

It’s silly that the premier team in the MCLA can’t even get a legal home field. Nobody will beat Michigan at home. In fact, nobody will come close.

That said, I hope these teams that get blown out at Oosterban go back and get to work so come Nationals someone will knock off Michigan. On a regulation field.

I’m digging the F2011, a some what classic style with the modern cushioned sole.

Rule book says you can play on a narrower field. It’s not illegal. This never seemed to be an issue back when these teams were regularly beating Michigan, and I’d say Michigan has backed it up by winning on the road over the past few years. They seem to adjust pretty well to a wider field when they need to. Look up their riding stats on outdoor fields. I’d be willing to bet they are just as good.

Bottom line is you have to win no matter the circumstances. Score doesn’t really matter. Over the past few years Michigan has proven they are the best team in the MCLA in this era.

Was not that impressed with CSU tonight. They weren’t nearly as athletic as Michigan, and their stick skills weren’t as polished. I think MSU gives them a good game tomorrow. Can’t decide if I want to go to that one, which I think will be a good game, or to the UM ASU game which may end up similar to tonight.

SECTION 2. The playing field shall be rectangular, 110 yards long and
60 yards wide. The boundaries of the field shall be marked with white or
contrasting-colored lines. The long sides of the field shall be designated
sidelines; the short sides shall be designated end lines. A bold white or
contrasting-colored line shall be marked through the center of the field
perpendicular to the sidelines. This line shall be known as the center line and
shall continue through any logos or other markings

A.R. 2. All markings on the field shall conform to the “Men’s Lacrosse Field of Play”
diagram in this book. Adherence to dimensions on the field diagram is mandatory unless
participating institutions mutually agree to different dimensions in writing, for those
    rules that are alterable.

I would be very curious to see how many teams have it writing before they play Michigan that they agree to play on a non-regulation field. It’s an illegal field. It doesn’t say it’s ok to have a narrow field.

Obviously Michigan is good on a regulation field. They have proven that for the past 3 year. They are a much better team at Oosterban though. Even before Michigan became “Michigan” the past 3 years, they rarely, rarely lost at home. Again, it’s silly that the flagship team of the MCLA plays on a non-regulation field. Welcome to Bush league.

There’s a lot of bush league in the MCLA. It’s a club league. My guess is not too many of the teams have their pick of fields on campus. They take what they can get. Probably a lot of regulations not followed. But my guess is a team that crosses every t and dots every i like Michigan probably does what they need to do to make sure they are legal.

If they only won at home, I’d agree with you. The fact is they win on the road and neutral too. And if playing on a narrow field (by 6 2/3 yards) is a huge advantage, then playing on a 60 yard field should be a disadvantage to them. Unlike everyone else, they have been overcoming disadvantages when they have to. That’s all I’m saying.

Quick research on their last three seasons:
2008 – played 13 ranked teams. Went 13-0 against them. One game against a ranked team was at home (Lindenwood).
2009 – played 12 ranked teams. Went 12-0 against them. Five at home.
2010 – played 14 ranked teams. Went 13-1 against them. One at home.

That’s 38-1 against ranked teams with only 7 of those games in Oosterbaan. Do they generally win by more at home? Yes. Isn’t everyone supposed to? If you don’t want to play them in Ann Arbor, then don’t. It’s not like they’ve dodged playing the best teams anywhere they can.

Geez. I’m not even really a Michigan fan. Look what you made me do. Now I’m definitely going to the MSU game tomorrow to balance all this out.

Nobody is going to argue that they are best team. They will win wherever they play. I believe them blowing out teams, especially the other good teams in the league, at home is at least partially due to their field.

    Consider this.

Michigan On the Road This Year:

Average Rank of Opponent (assume 30 for unranked teams)-20

    Average Margin of Victory- 6

    Michigan At Home This Year

    Average Rank of Opponent- 14.6

    Average Margin of Victory- 14.16

    —————–

No matter where they play, they are better. But the sketchy home field advantage of Oosterban is giving them a ridiculous edge in home games.

  • Anonymous

And to your point “If you don’t want to play them in Ann Arbor, then don’t. It’s not like they’ve dodged playing the best teams anywhere they can.”

That is my point. If you are a top team, going to Ann Arbor shouldn’t even cross your mind until they play their games somewhere else.

  • Anonymous

OK. So your point is that they win bigger at home than they do on the road. I agree. Good point.

And I disagree about avoiding them at their place. If you’re probably going to lose to them anyway, at least get the experience of playing them during the regular season. That experience will probably help if you see them again at the tourney. I respect teams like CSU and ASU and BYU that accept that challenge.

I have seen a lot of games in Oosterbaan now. I really don’t think it’s as big an advantage as some say. I don’t see teams dropping a lot of balls. Michigan didn’t win tonight because of their ride. CSU cleared pretty well. Aside from that, a narrow field wouldn’t make much difference. CSU just wasn’t that close athletically or skill-wise, and the Michigan goalies played great.

CSU used to own Michigan right? Even at Oosterbaan. They are both just different teams now.

Probably doesn’t matter in the long run anyway. If UM goes D1 they definitely won’t be playing in Oosterbaan anymore. It’s too dangerous. Some little kid got beaned in the head by a pass tonight. No way the athletic department takes that risk once they are running lacrosse.

Geez, this man is trying hard to find some reason to hate. Too narrow field? Win bigger at home? C’mon, man. Look at Chapman home vs away….or any other top tier team. You will find same.
As responder noted, they play on what they have. I suspect new filed access coming soon, but o’ban is what is has been for a decade+.

Happy to report not one of my players on my youth team has a chrome head. My son is the goalie, hoping he doesn’t change his mind after reading this post.

  • http://twitter.com/ckerst Cam

Yes, if your clear is all about running around the ride, then it’s a big disadvantage to you.

  • Anonymous

    Chapman at Home

    Average Margin of Victory- 4.4
    Average Rank of Opponent- 17.75

    Chapman on the Road

    Average Margin of Victory- 4
    Average Rank of Opponent- 18.75

That seems like a much more reasonable home field advantage.

Learn about riding, especially 10 man rides. Anyone who says that a 7 yard more narrow field doesn’t assist in riding, regardless of clearing technique, doesn’t know that much about lacrosse.

  • Anonymous

To make it easier to understand:

There is a 136% goal differential increase for Michigan home against opponents ranked an average of 5.4 spots higher

There is a 10% goal differential increase for Chapman at home against opponents ranked an average of 1 spot higher

  • http://twitter.com/ckerst Cam

Speaking to this topic, I have yet to see a bad player with a chrome head, and I feel like all is well in the universe.

  • Anonymous

“More reasonable”? By whose standard? Tell me the defined acceptable amount.
Tonight shows that it is the teams, not the field.
Your methods don’t account for blowouts – see Gauchos; Pitt – that inflate numbers.
Unless the goal is 7 inches narrower on one end of field, I think you are looking to hate, nothing more.

  • Anonymous

You are going to use tonight as an example? They just went back to back with the next two best teams in the league and won both. On back to back nights. Not really a strong case against home field.

I don’t know the exact amount of accepted difference, but I can confidently say it’s not 136% difference.

  • Anonymous

nice to know you are ‘confident’. the world sleeps easier with a gifted lad like you here – who needs the dead sea scrolls when your here?
geez – you are the kind of little boy who is anchored to his thoughts.
note ignoring flaw of methods – Pitt get treated like a “top 30 team” yeah right, and UCSB shellacking is ascribed to 7 yards – yeah, I buy that!
next, can you count nose hairs – i bet Michigan has too many of those to be acceptable!

  • Anonymous

Ohio got the same ranking. Pitt beat Ohio. Michigan beat Ohio on the road by 10, beat Pittsburg at home by 19.

Nobody is arguing that it’s only because of Oosterban that they are winning. It’s just a big reason why they are so much better at home than on the road.

  • Anonymous

so since you replicated the same flaw twice and got varying results, it proves the “big” effect at O’ban? amazing!

And since Oregon-Mich was close, it absolutely proves you are correct – it was not at O’ba! Brillant!!. Uh oh yeah, I forgot – it was monsoon season when they played (just like it was a snowstorm year before – but that stuff got nothing to do with it – its the absent magic of 7 yards at O’ban!)

maybe it just means the methods are flawed….again, analyze nose hairs or number of third molars per team – i bet you get “a difference” too!

  • Anonymous

Yep there will probably be a difference. But it won’t be 136%. Are you denying that Oosterban is the greatest home field advantage in the MCLA? I think most Michigan players wouldn’t argue that. I was just putting numbers to how much of advantage it is.

Also, if you are so caught up about the bad team blow outs, removing unranked teams widens the gap even more between home and away.
