Chicago Showcase Part 2

Chicago Bears

Part 2 of our coverage from this weekend’s recruiting event in the Second City.

Did you read Part 1? It was a bit of a ballad. One reader had a meltdown because we mentioned the Maverik Showtime Camp again. Part 2 features some left over photos, what happened between the first and second session, and the recruiting that has taken place since.

The drive up from Bloomington offers what can be described as nothing short of break taking scenery.

It’s not so much as depressing as it is erie. That’s not even Droid being difficult and tainting the color. That is actually the environment looked like in the north west region of the state.

Most recognizable players at the combine?

One look at the cow shorts and you know exactly what team these kids play for and we’re they from. Why it’s Wisconsin of course! Some of the better players at the combine were Milkmen representatives. Great to see polished players from young lacrosse regions. It’s all about coaching. The director of the Milkmen, Jaron Klopstein, is also the new head coach at Wisconsin.

We were speaking with him Sunday night about a few Milkmen players when he mentioned that he had already received phone calls regarding a certain player. Now prior to that admission, we had been organizing our player packet for the next session. Day one was spent identifying players we really wanted and players that we didn’t want. That way we could spend more time on the second day devoting ourselves to watching those players we were unsure of.

All we wanted to do Sunday was to get organized so day two was more streamlined. All that changed when Coach Klopstein mentioned that he had received phone calls from college coaches to discuss a Milkmen player. We convinced ourselves that if the coaches were contacting club directors to ask questions, then they were also contacting the players at the combine that evening. Naturally, we didn’t want to fall behind. Our night was just beginning.

If we were correct in assuming other coaches were contacting recruits at the combine, we had some work to do. So we reached out to every senior we wanted, the top 10 juniors, and the Indiana players in attendance. An early evening turned into a long night but it proved worthwhile as almost all of the players we emailed showed up to talk to us at the college fair. One senior gave an invalid email address so we missed out on him at the college fair but we have his phone number. People used to use that technology after all.

Who knows whether the other schools actually contacted recruits after night one. We’re glad we did and we’ll make sure we do it at every event in the future. Learning on the fly. Future’s bright in Bloomington.

Some of our more memorable player notes included:

“Quick f***er. High IQ for a sophomore.”

“Gave up some early goals, but stayed in the game mentally even after the coaches’ sideline emptied.”

“Questionable stick skills, but BALLISTIC quickness.” Yes, ballistic was capitalized. Probably laughed when we wrote it down. Hate Quint Kessenich.

“Huge, mean, good teammate.” Might have also been the pole that crashed into the coaches on the sideline. Wasn’t fun.

Now three days removed from the Showcase, we’re pounding the pavement for more seniors while laying the groundwork for the 2012 and 2013 classes. Call me Bastian because it’s a NeverEnding Story. Hey, if Ohio State can become an elite basketball program…

American Revolution Update

We recently spoke with players from Western Michigan, Auburn, Duluth, and Detroit Mercy.

When are you getting signed up?

Lacrosse

Don’t miss out on our tour of England and Denmark this August. Make sure to like us on Facebook.

We’re partnering up with ArchLevel Lacrosse for the British leg of the tour. It’s going to be raw magic. Raw. Magic.

Speaking of Western Michigan

Watch at ice level as Dennis Brown goes to absolute work against Ohio State’s goalie, Cam Heeter.

Proper reactions all around.

Garbage

Illinois’ new Nike Hyper Elite uniforms looks like optical illusions.

Nike basketball

Nothing says “Turn my swag on,” quite like 54′s highly stylized Amish goatee. Not going to discuss Daniel Tosh’s little brother.

NHL in 360, must watch video

Not sure why the Jets are being so cordial to the Steelers. Smells like a trick heckle.

IU practice in 90 minutes

I went and saw that Buffalo Sabres exhibit with the NHL 360. As someone who’s never played hockey it did make me appreciate it more after seeing it. The game is much different on the ice then it is watching it. I’m hoping the NHL does something along those lines with other teams in the near future
